Makapuu
Makapuu is Hawaiian for "Bulging Eyes",
this beach is located below Makapu'u Point where the landmark
Makapuu lighthouse is located. This is a very popular beach
for bodysurfing and bodyboarding with large shorebreak. swimming
hazardous. Rabbit Island sits just offshore and makes this beach
very picturesque.
Makapuu's shore is lined with soft white sand.
Though the water is prestine it may not be safe to swim due
to riptides and currents caused by the waves. Perfect spot to
sunbath and watch bodyboarders tear up the waves.
Makapuu is a great spot to sight see. Located
right above the beach is Makapuu lighthouse a landmark on Oahu.
There are many lookouts above the beach that provide an excellent
view of Makapuu beach and two islands immediately off shore.

The smaller island is Kaohikaipu, commonly known
as Black Rock. The larger island is Manana, commonly known as
Rabbit Island. Rabbit Island was for many years the home of
a small colony of rabbits, but none of them remain today.

If you are not familiar with Makapuu and have
concerns about safety consult the lifeguard on duty. Always
use common sense if waves are huge do not go in the water. Surfing
is also prohibited at Makapuu and ask lifeguard for the extent
of the boundaries.
